2015 – 2016 SEASON

ON THE MAINSTAGE – January/February 2016

Glyn Maxwell’s

THE GAMBLER

Based on the Story By Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Directed by Karen Lordi Kirkham

Fyodor Dostoyevsky in 1866, in serious debt, addicted to roulette and rejected by several women, spun these sad materials into ‘The Gambler’, a brilliant tragicomic novella written in a feverish few weeks to stave off ruin. Olivier-nominated playwright Glyn Maxwell recreates the madness and mayhem of a world enthralled by chance, sex and money, a world without values or foundations, spinning out of control.

JOSEPH VITALE’S

MURROW

Directed by Jeremy Williams

Joseph Menino stars in the American premiere covering Murrow’s rise from the beginnings of Columbia Broadcasting Systems to onsite reports of the 1940’s bombing of London, to the liberation of Buchenwald, to the on-air collapse of Senator Joe McCarthy’s “Red Scare” campaign to expose communists in the Federal Government and elsewhere.  More than just a biographical look at an icon and pioneer of American broadcast journalism, Murrow is a stinging indictment of the contemporary corporate-media complex.

ERIC BENTLEY’S

ARE YOU NOW OR HAVE YOU EVER BEEN

Eric Bentley’s riveting  drama based on the infamous HUAC hearings in the 1950’s, a time of suspicion, fear and government surveillance, which was an outgrowth of Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy’s “anticommunist inquisition” when figures from the world of show business (Lionel Stander, Abe Burrows, Larry Parks, Elia Kazan, Jerome Robbins, Jose Ferrer, Paul Robeson, etc)  were subpoenaed to testify to their loyalty as Americans and asked to name any and all communists or suspected communists in their industry.
