Before The Bourne Identity or The Manchurian Candidate, Brecht’s parable, set in 1920s British Colonial India, witnesses a young man transformed by His Majesty’s army into the perfect soldier, his thoughts and fate controlled as his mind is dismantled and reassembled like a machine.

In 1942, young English expat Eric Bentley becomes translator to Bertolt Brecht, who is living in exile, seeking to spread his fame in America. But Bentley strives to make his own theatrical mark. During their collaboration, they hide their true motives and suppress grievances, until a bitter meeting, years later.

Set during the Thirty Years' War of 1618–1648, Brecht’s epic theatre classic follows the fortunes of "Mother Courage," a shrewd canteen woman with the Swedish Army, who is determined to make a profit from the war, no matter the cost.
