Evolve Theatre is a project that creates a common space for elders and youth to create art, tell stories, share wisdom, have fun, and experience the transformative power of theatre.
In our modern, institutionalized culture, we are often segregated by age. Elders and youth have few opportunities for interaction. Yet now, more than ever, we can all benefit from our shared stories about how to live, how to grow, how to age gracefully.
Evolve Theatre Project offers a space for elders and youth to connect and explore these questions through the powerful medium of theatre. Through movement, music, improv, scene-work, and storytelling, Evolve ensembles create compelling and entertaining plays that express the glorious struggles of our own evolution.
Phoenix Theatre Ensemble’s Evolve program was piloted at University Settlement House in New York City. Meerkat Media’s award-winning documentary, Stages, follows the 20 week process of theatre sessions with Phoenix teaching artists, elders and youth, culminating in a performance at an Off-Broadway theatre in Manhattan.
